Terms of Use

The short version. MovieFinder is free, run by a small company on modest infrastructure, and offered as-is. Use it to find films. Do not scrape it, attack it, or resell it. Film data belongs to TMDB, your ratings belong to you, and we can suspend an account that abuses the service. Nothing here takes away rights you have as a consumer.

1. This agreement

These terms are between you and Soltech Consulting Limited, registered in England and Wales under company number 16946304, with its registered office at 53 La Rose Lane, London N15 3AP. Using MovieFinder means accepting them. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.

How we handle your personal data is covered separately, in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of this agreement.

2. What the service is

MovieFinder learns your film taste from films you rate and suggests films you are unlikely to have seen. It is free, and there is no paid tier to upgrade to.

It is a recommendation tool and nothing more. It does not stream films, does not sell or rent them, and is not affiliated with any studio, distributor or streaming service. Where it says a film is available somewhere, that information comes from a third party and may be out of date or wrong for your country — check before you rely on it.

Recommendations are exactly that. We do not promise you will like anything the service picks, and the explanation it gives for a pick is a description of how it decided, not a claim of fact about the film.

3. Your account

You need an account to save ratings. Signing in is by a one-time code sent to your email address, so there is no password to choose or lose.

• Use an email address you control, and keep access to it secure. Anyone who can read your email can sign in as you.
• One account per person. Do not share it, and do not sign in as anybody else.
• You must be 13 or over to create an account.

4. Acceptable use

MovieFinder runs on deliberately small infrastructure, and the cost of serving it scales with how it is used. Please do not:

• Access it by automated means — scripts, scrapers, crawlers or bots — other than a search engine obeying our robots.txt.
• Extract, copy or republish the film catalogue, in bulk or systematically. It is not ours to give away; see section 6.
• Resell access to the service, or pass it off as your own.
• Attempt to bypass sign-in, reach another user's data, probe for vulnerabilities without asking us first, or interfere with the service or the infrastructure it runs on.
• Deliberately place unreasonable load on it, whether or not that load is automated.

If you think you have found a security problem, please tell us at privacy@soltechconsulting.co.uk before doing anything else with it. We will not pursue anyone who reports a genuine issue in good faith and gives us a reasonable chance to fix it.

5. Your ratings

Your ratings, your watchlist and your preferences are yours. We do not claim ownership of them. By using the service you give us permission to store and process them for the one purpose of running MovieFinder for you — building your taste profile, choosing recommendations, and explaining them. That permission ends when you delete your account.

We do not publish your ratings, show them to other users, or share them with anyone.

6. Film data and TMDB

All film information, posters, backdrops and stills come from The Movie Database (TMDB). This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.

That material belongs to TMDB and its contributors, and to the studios and rights holders behind each film. It is shown to you here so you can decide what to watch. It is not yours to reuse, and this agreement gives you no licence over it. If you want to use TMDB's data yourself, go to TMDB and agree their terms directly.

Everything else on the site — the name, the design, the code and the recommendation system — belongs to Soltech Consulting Limited.

7. Trailers

Trailers play through an embedded YouTube player, and only when you press play. Doing so means YouTube's own terms and Google's privacy policy apply to that playback. We do not control what is available or whether a given trailer keeps working.

8. Availability

We would rather be plain than lawyerly about this. MovieFinder is a free service running on free-tier infrastructure. There is no uptime commitment, no support commitment and no service level agreement. It may be slow, it may be briefly unavailable, and features may change or be withdrawn.

We may also stop running the service altogether. If we decide to, we will give account holders reasonable notice by email and a way to export their ratings before it goes.

The service is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we exclude the implied warranties that would otherwise apply — that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose of yours.

9. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

Subject to that, and to the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, loss of data, or loss arising from your reliance on a recommendation or on availability information. Because the service is free, our total liability to you for any claim connected with it is limited to £100.

If you are a consumer, you have statutory rights under UK consumer law that these terms do not affect. Nothing here is intended to take those away.

10. Ending it

You can stop using MovieFinder whenever you like. To delete your account and everything stored under it, email privacy@soltechconsulting.co.uk from the address you signed up with.

We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms — in particular section 4 — or that places the service at risk. Where it is reasonable to do so we will tell you why and give you a chance to put it right first. Where the breach is serious or ongoing we may act immediately.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top changes when we do. If a change materially affects your rights, we will email account holders rather than rely on you spotting it. Continuing to use the service after a change means accepting the new terms; if you do not accept them, stop using the service and ask us to delete your account.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK, you may also bring proceedings in your own local courts.
